Franz Joseph I (1830–1916), Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, with his wife Elisabeth (Sisi), ruled a multi-ethnic state with a population of 56 million, among them Germans, Hungarians, Czechs, Poles, Serbians, Croatians, Romanians, Slovaks and Italians. Despite the political and social conservatism of the emperor himself, cultural and intellectual life blossomed under the Dual (Imperial and Royal) Monarchy, exemplified by the opulent public and private buildings of the Vienna ‘Ringstrasse’ which were built during his reign.
