Elisabeth, known as Sisi (1837–1890), was a sixteen-year-old duchess from Bavaria when, through her marriage to her Habsburg cousin Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria, she became Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary. Uncomfortable with the strict etiquette practiced at the Viennese court, she spent the greater part of her life travelling. Sisi was regarded as one of the most beautiful and extravagant women of her time and was not only a great horsewoman, but also a devotee and composer of poetry.
